The Quakers were probably brought into the area by Samuel Noyes, serge-maker from Devizes, who was active in 1658. A Quaker from Devizes was fined in the same year for speaking out in Urchfont Church. He would not pay the fine and so was imprisoned. By 1707 the Market Lavington meeting had established a meeting place at Urchfont but meetings seem to lapse after this date.
