Primitive Methodist Chapel, Lydiard Millicent

A Methodist circuit was established in Wiltshire by 1828; Lydiard Millicent was one of the centres of the movement. However it wasn't until 1863 that that a registered place of worship could be found in the parish. The Primitive Methodist Chapel at Lydiard Green is of red brick in the plain classical style. The facade has bold angle pilasters and a pediment gable. The Methodists had local lay preachers. Lantern slide shows were held there in the 1930s and there was a Sunday school. Whitsun Sunday was the Sunday school's anniversary and there was a choir, anniversary hymns and recitations. On Whit Monday there was a tea party at Mr. Webb's Farm with evening games. The Chapel was enlarged and refurbished in 1909 and was still in use as a chapel in 2004, but has now been converted to a private house.
