Corton Chapel of Ease, Boyton
A chapel founded by the Drewys family was in existence before 1291. After being united with Boyton it seems to have fallen into decay and there is no mention of it in the Valor Ecclesiasticus. At a court case in 1611, concerning a dispute about the tithe lands, various witnesses were asked what they knew about this chapel. One man, aged 80, said he remembered helping to pull the chapel down some 43 years earlier.
When Sir Richard Colt Hoare visited Boyton in the early 1820s, the locals pointed out to him a hole in the ground called 'Chapel Hole'. The site is named on the 1887 6†map. Tradition was that a church had once stood upon this spot, but had been 'swallowed up by diabolical agency'. The most likely explanation is that the hole was caused by an underground spring, but the site of the chapel was probably close by.
