A chapel stood at Charlton from the 14th century. It had a chancel, nave, south porch and west tower. After the mid 16th century the chapel was served by a curate.
The chapel yard was enclosed c.1726 with a stone wall, surviving in part in the late 20th century. The church was demolished in 1839 and a new one, dedicated to St. John the Apostle, was built.
In 1553 a 10oz chalice was left in the chapel. The church plate included '1 cuppe or challis of x ovnc. bell ij and plate'.
