In the late 16th century John Grove of Ferne Manor was a recusant, along with several other families in the parish. The Arundell family sheltered Jesuits in the later 17th century and there was a small Roman Catholic presence in the parish after this. A chapel dedicated to St. Bartholomew opened on St. Bartholomew's Hill in 1857; it closed in 1960. A school for Roman Catholic children was supported by Baroness Arundell in 1808 but does not seem to have flourished.
