Primitive Methodist Chapel, Steeple Ashton

There must have been a substantial number of Methodists in the 18th century as in 1783, when a few were meeting in a labourer's house, the curate said that their numbers had decreased by some hundreds in recent years. It could be that he was referring to a larger area that just the environs of Steeple Ashton. A house was licensed for Methodist meetings in 1797. In 1829 Methodists were meeting in a farmhouse with eight members of the church and a congregation of 50. In the 1851 religious census it is recorded that one room of a house was set aside exclusively for worship; there were 120 seats and the average size of the congregation was about 100 people.

A Primitive Methodist chapel was built in the northern part of the village in 1854. It is a plain brick building with seating for 130 people. The building was extended in 1991.
