Non-Conformists, Broad Hinton

In 1676 it was reported that there were three non-conformists in Broad Hinton but none were reported in 1783. In February 1822 a house in the occupation of Robert Comely, Independent, was certified for worship and in 1846 a house in Broad Hinton was recorded as being licensed for the meetings of dissenters. In 1864 a house in Broad Hinton was recorded as that of a 'Bible Christian or Baptist' who held meetings for dissenters. This may have been the house certified in 1846. At this date there were some 50 non-conformists in the parish, amongst whom were 'Baptists or Brethren', Primitive Methodists, Wesleyan Methodists and Mormons. A number of them may have worshipped at chapels in Broad Town which then belonged to Broad Hinton parish and where non-conformism thrived in the 19th century. However, it is known that in 1811 a house in Uffcott was certified for Methodist worship.
