Baptists were allowed to worship in the parish by indulgence of the lord of the manor in 1799. A chapel for Particular Baptists was built in 1819 on the west side of the lane running westwards towards Enford Farm. On Census Sunday in 1851, 101 people attended the morning service with 120 in the evening A school for children of dissenters existed, and 40 children attended in 1858. The chapel became War Department property in 1899 and was destroyed by fire in 1959. For some time after this services were held in a private house.
