Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Pitton

There is evidence of Methodism in Pitton in 1801. A woman called Jane Mills practiced in her home on Slateway; the house is now demolished. Her father in law, John, was a practising Methodist who came to Pitton from Andover.

In 1834 Thomas Whitlock gave a plot of land for a Methodist chapel. His brother, a Mr G. Whitlock, gave £20 to the expenses of the chapel. This chapel was built roofed with slate, not thatch. It was found near to the site of the church and Church House.
By 1870 Methodism was flourishing in Pitton.
Indeed, by 1888 there were too many people to fit into the chapel and the present chapel, on White Hill, was built. In 1934 this was extended through the building of a schoolroom.
