Anglican Church, Braydon

Braydon's vicar from 1853-1860 was Alan Broderick. He was succeeded by the Reverend Digby Octavius Coates, who helped build the first building for parishioners to worship in, erected in 1868; the church was never consecrated and had no dedication. It is thought this original building was built somewhere in the vicinity of The Firs. On the death of Rev. Coates, his wife organised for it to be moved nearer to the road which links Ashton Keynes to Wootton Bassett, now the B4696; subsequently, vicars came from Purton and Wootton Bassett. For example, Albert Horatio Dunn, a lay reader, preached for thirty years until his death in 1928. In 1954 the vicar only visited once a month. The church was closed in the 1970s and was sold as a private house in 1980. The altar is now found in St Nicholas' Chapel in nearby Purton. There are no parish registers and baptisms, marriages and burials of people for Braydon are likely to be found in the Purton registers which, apart from those in current use, are held in the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre in Chippenham.
