Three dissenters were recorded as being in the parish in 1676.It is likely that several of the quarrymen would have been non-conformists and in the 17th and 18th centuries they would have provided much of the congregation of the meeting houses. On 11 July 1799 a house belonging to Charity Humphrey was licensed for independent worship. Another house was licensed on 11 April 1802. This belonged to Thomas Rowden.
