Free Chapel of St. Mary Magdalen, Corton

The first documentation of a free chapel at Corton was a deed dating from 1250-60. It is believed to have been located in a field to the south of Corton Farm and is marked on the earlier maps of the area. In 1291, the chapel was valued at £5. The chapel was shown as being dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen in 1588-9. It survived up until the Reformation. The great tithes in Corton belonged to the chapel although there was some dispute in the early 16th century about the tithes from Corton Farm, formerly belonging to the free chapel there.
