The earliest reference to non-conformity in the parish is from 10th July 1735, when a license was granted to Mary Burnley for Quaker worship. The same year, a house of Sarah Burley became a Quaker meeting place. Also in 1745 another house was licensed for Quaker worship, under the name of William Fry. The exact date is not known. Then a further house was certified on 7 March 1836 belonging to a John Prior.
