St. Leonard';s Chapel Rockley, Ogbourne St. Andrew

A 13th century chapel, dedicated to St. Leonard by the early 15th century, stood at Rockley; the location of the chapel is not known. The priory of Bec-Hellouin, to which Maud Wallingford had granted the church at Ogbourne St. Andrew c1130, had responsibility for the maintenance of the chancel. The inhabitants of Rockley were obliged to attend the church of Ogbourne St. Andrew on Church feast days as Mass was not said at St. Leonard's Chapel, which was served by a chaplain only. Numerous records refer to the poor state of maintenance of the chapel during the course of the 15th century. After 1583 the chapel had been demolished and no further references have been found with the exception of one statement, possibly incorrect, by a vicar in 1848 appealing for a church to be established in Rockley, that the village ‘enjoyed some 100 years since the blessings of a church’.
