Methodist Meetings, Ogbourne St. Andrew

On 14 June 1817 a meeting house certificate was granted in respect of the house and premises in Ogbourne St. Andrew of Joseph Waldin, a Methodist. At Rockley on 26 May 1818 a certificate was granted in respect of a cottage in the occupation of John Peck, Methodist. John Clark, founder of the Tabernacle Methodist church in Trowbridge, had preached to spinners in Rockley in 1779, indicating an earlier presence of Methodists.

The next reference to Methodist worship in the parish is in the form of a meeting house certificate granted to a house in the occupation of Isaac Pryer, a Wesleyan Methodist.

The Bishop’s visitation enquiries of 1864 indicate that Primitive Methodists met in a private house at that date.

No further references have been found concerning the presence of Methodists in Ogbourne St. Andrew. The early 20th century Marlborough circuit schedule shows a congregation at Ogbourne St. George which inhabitants of Ogbourne St. Andrew may have joined for worship.
