In 1818 and 1819 the house of William Shipman was licensed for Methodist worship. In the following year, 1820, a building owned by the baker, Thomas Shipman, was licensed. Money to build a chapel was raised and at the close of 1822 this was licensed. This Wesleyan Methodist chapel had seating for 134 people, including 32 in the gallery. In 1851 the average attendance was 90 – 100. The chapel closed in 1970.
