In 1676 there were reported to be five non-conformists in the parish, although their denomination was not recorded. In 1864 responses to the Visitation queries of that year quoted the figure of some 10 per cent of the parish population being “Anabaptists”, although it was stated that no meeting house was in existence. In 1893 an iron mission hall for Wesleyan Methodists was built near Friday’s Lane; however, this had closed by 1925 and the site is now occupied by residential premises.
