It is likely that a large part of the rectorial tithes had become concentrated in Hinton in the Martyn family and they sold the Steeple Ashton part of them. The retained great tithes of Hinton passed with Anne, daughter and sole heir of John Martyn of Hinton, on her marriage to Richard Long and so eventually came into the possession of Walter Long. No church was built at Great Hinton and villagers are most likely to have walked to Steeple Ashton to attend church services.
