Non-Conformists, East Kennett

In 1676 Henry Compton, Bishop of London, required the incumbents of all parishes to return numbers of Conformists, Roman Catholics and Non-conformists within their parishes. Not all complied with the requirement but East Kennett reported that there were 61 members of the Church of England, no Roman Catholics and three non-conformists.

There is no record of a non-conformist meeting house in East Kennett parish licensed as required under the Toleration Act of 1689 (repealed in 1852). However, non-conformists were active in the neighbouring settlements of Fyfield, Overton and Lockeridge in the 18th and 19th centuries and it cannot therefore be discounted that dissenters in East Kennett worshipped with their fellows in neighbouring parishes.
