Berwick St James appears to have had a small nonconformist population from at least the end of the eighteenth century. Three houses in Berwick were certified for meetings of nonconformists: two for Baptists in 1796 and 1816 respectively, and one for independents in 1815. By 1864 there were 13 Baptists in Berwick St James, however by this point there does not appear to have been any place of worship for them, nor would there be beyond this point.
