Nonconformist

There is some evidence of nonconformity in the parish, largely dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A recusant named Robert Dominick is listed at Chicklade in 1594, whilst in 1662 five people were listed as refusing to attend church and it is possible that they too were recusants. There were two Protestant nonconformists in 1676, and three absentees from the church in 1688 who may again have been recusants. Other than this there is no evidence of nonconformity in the parish after the seventeenth century, though in the eighteenth century there was note of two or three people who regularly did not attend church or declared themselves to be disinterested in religion.
