Non-conformist activity is recorded in 1685 when a Matthew Gattrell of Stop addressed gatherings of non-conformists. Further records of such worship came later when meeting house certificates were granted between 1786 and 1820 for use by Independents. A Congregational chapel at the Dene, close to northern boundary of the parish with Hindon, was in existence by c.1791 and a new chapel was built in the same location in 1810. This section of the parish was transferred to Hindon in 1934.
