Non-conformist

Sixteen non-conformists were recorded in Marden in 1676. Quakers have resided in the parish since the mid 17th century, the Amor family refused to pay tithes in 1660. Wm. Moxon also refused to pay tithes during the period 1657-1687 and was frequently imprisoned for this. In 1852 a cottage in the churchyard, occupied by Wm. Wise, was registered by Primitive Methodists as a place of worship, but by 1864, no dissenters were recorded in Marden. Particular Baptists registered a house in 1871. In 1887 a General Baptist Chapel stood along Marden Mere, south of Church Mill, this was replaced by a chapel, on the west of Marden Street, and dated 1899. This chapel closed in 1951 and was converted to a dwelling house.
