Church of the Holy Saviour, Westbury Leigh, Westbury

Until the 1850s Westbury Leigh was served by its two Baptist chapels and Anglicans travelled either to the parish church of Westbury or to that of Dilton Marsh. From 1855 church services were held in a schoolroom and in 1876 an appeal was launched for funds to build a church. This was opened in 1877 as a chapel of ease to Westbury parish church. It was designed by W.H. White and built of stone in the Gothic style. Originally there was just a chancel, nave and south porch; a south aisle was added in 1888. A tower was added in 1890 by Mrs Phipps as a memorial to her husband, Leckonby Hathersall Phipps. The nave of the church has now been converted into a community centre and the chancel retained as a place of worship.
