Upper Congregational Chapel, Westbury

Some members of the Lower Meeting (later the Old Congregational Chapel) withdrew in 1751 and first held meetings in a barn between Westbury and Westbury Leigh. They opened a chapel on the western side of Warminster Road in 1763 and this became known as the Upper Meeting. By 1829 there was a congregation of 300. During the 19th century several attempts were made to reunite the two congregations but they all failed. It was not until 8th May 1940 that they came together to form the Congregational Church of Westbury. The Upper Chapel was closed and all meetings were held in the old chapel. The Upper Chapel is a plain brick building that was was used as both a builder's and a furniture store and, in 1988, was converted into three houses.
