This dedication was in use by 1191 for the parish church of the town, while the monks used the abbey church dedicated to St. Mary and St. Aldhelm. By the early 1500s the parish church was in a very poor state of repair and in 1541 it was replaced by the church of the recently dissolved abbey. In 1542 it was said that all that remained of St. Paul's was the west tower, then converted into a house, and part of the eastern end of the church. It is possible that this eastern part may have continued in ecclesiastical use until the 1630s. It was later used for meetings of the Corporation, was then a poorhouse and, when it was demolished in 1852, a timber warehouse. The 14th century tower of limestone rubble with ashlar dressings remains and houses eight bells that are rung for services in the abbey church.
