Quakers, Salisbury

Quakers were not really active until the early 1680s although there is some evidence that they were in the city in the 1650s. A regular monthly meeting was established by 1697 and in 1703 two houses were used as Quaker meeting houses. By 1713 a new house in Gigant Street was licensed and used by Quakers. The Salisbury monthly meeting was abandoned in 1717 although preparative meetings were held in the city until 1827. They resumed meetings in Salisbury at the Rechabite Hall and preparative meetings were established in 1946.They remained here until around 1962 but from 1964 until at least 1974 they were meeting at 44 Harcourt Terrace. In 2003 the meeting is at 9 Norfolk Road.
