In 1778, 1780 and 1794 houses in Wilton were licensed for Wesleyan Methodist worship and the movement was growing in strength at the end of the 18th century.. In 1829 there was said to be a congregation of 150 in the town and in 1830 another house was licensed. A Methodist chapel was opened in North Street in 1831 with 24 free and 80 other seats. In the 1851 religious census the attendances were, 60 in the morning and afternoon and 100 at the evening service. The chapel was thriving during the 19th century but had closed by 1936. After that date the Primitive Methodist Church in Kingsbury Square became the Methodist Church in Wilton.
