Church of St. Nicholas in Atrio, Wilton

This medieval church, which may have been in the Market Place, had its chaplain appointed by the Abbess of Wilton. In 1366 the church was ruinous and its parishioners were placed under the care of the rector of St. Andrews at Ditchampton. The church was united with that of St. Michael at Kingsbury in 1435 and a licence to rebuild the church was granted by Bishop Aiscough in 1445. Funds were raised from parishioners who were granted an indulgence of 40 days (a remission of penalties for forgiven sins) if they gave money. The church was completely restored. It was considered part of the abbey property and was not used as a church after the dissolution of the abbey. It had gone by the 16th century.
