Methodist Chapel, Colerne

During much of the 19th century Methodists from Colerne attended the chapel at Thickwood or met in the old club room at the top of the yard of the Six Bells Inn. From 1867 open air services were held at Colerne and took up most of a day. They were held in a field with up to three services during the day. At the end of the century the movement was strong enough locally to raise £480 towards the building of a chapel in 1895. The chapel was successful in the early 20th century but at some point in the early 1930s this chapel seems to have become the Methodist Chapel. After the Second World War the congregation declined and schemes of union with the Anglicans were proposed in 1966 and 1980 but came to nothing. The chapel could not continue with its small membership and closed by common consent, with the last service taking place in October 1984.
