In 1689 a dwelling house at Willersley, belonging to Alice Franklyn and John Watts was licensed for Presbyterian worship. Nothing is known of these early Presbyterians and it was not until 1776 that another meeting house certificate was granted, for the house of John Ball, near to the Upper Cross. This was for Independent worship and this, and further licenses granted for Independent worship, between 1798 and 1815 were probably for the members that were to form the Congregational chapel.
