Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Downton

The chapel was built and certified in 1814 to serve a strong group of local Methodists, who had also opened a Sunday School by 1815. The chapel was on Lode Hill, to the east of the junction with Slab Lane. In 1849 some of the members differed on points of doctrine and broke away to form the New Wesleyan Reformed chapel. The original meeting continued to prosper and on Census Sunday in 1851 their two services attracted a total of 278 people. This chapel was apparently replaced by the High Street chapel in 1896 but does not seem to have closed completely until 1919.
