Chapel of St. Leonard, Whelpley, Whiteparish

Whelpley was a fairly early settlement and by 1086 was the largest in the modern parish. It had a chapel, measuring 37 feet 6 inches by 17 feet externally, by the 13th century. Chaplains were appointed until 1538 but the settlement was shrinking in the 15th century and, apart from one farm, may have disappeared by 1538. Certainly after that date the chapel fell out of use. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was used as a stable and hen house.
