Baptist Chapel, Bromham

The success of the early Baptist church is largely due to the efforts of George Perren, pastor of the chapel at Sandy Lane. A license was granted for meetings to be held in a house in November 1827 and in 1828 he began to build the first chapel. This was licensed in June 1829 and George Perren became the minister. His successor, G. Anstie started the Baptist school, later the British school, in 1843. The congregation grew and a new chapel was built in 1873. In 1885 it was said that this chapel could accommodate 200 people; there were 13 members and 65 children in the Sunday School. Membership stayed at around this level, there were 15 in 1920, and by 1938 the chapel was a mission station of the Castle Street Baptist Chapel at Calne. It closed during the Second World War.
