St Peter's Church, Biddestone

This church, demolished in1846, was probably the earliest recorded structure in Biddestone. It had possible Saxon origins, was rebuilt in 1430 and had been mentioned in the Domesday Book. The church had a turret in the west end which was later built into Castle Combe Manor. The 19th century drawings now found in St Nicholas' Church show a nave, north transept and south porch. The church appeared to be larger than that of the present church of St Nicholas. It was situated on the eastern edge of the village, beyond the manor, now the site of greenhouses.
