Very interesting article. Richard Knight (b East Cornwall in 1835) and Mary Anne Ross (Knight) (b Wigston Magna, Leicestershire in 1838) are my maternal great grand parents. Elizabeth Mary Knight (Warden) (b Colyton, Devon in 1867) is my maternal grand mother. Charles Warden (b Willesden in 1857) was the Bailiff on the Clarendon Park Estate next to Alderbury. His wife tragically died leaving him with four children under ten years of age and two years later he married Elizabeth Mary Knight, the local school mistress. They had just one daughter, Violet Ross Warden (b Alderbury in 1905) my mother. Soon after, the family moved to Bemerton, Salisbury, and opened two market gardens, under the name C Warden & Sons, run by his two sons Charles and Edwin, my mother’s half brothers. My brother and I were evacuated to Salisbury during WW2, and lived with grandma Elizabeth and her stepson Charles (Uncle Charlie). I am 90 years old and fascinated by my ancestry. Hello, Richard Knight is my great grandfather, and his wife Mary Ann Ross is my great grandmother. Elizabeth Mary knight(Warden) is my grandma, who I knew well. Her brother, Edward Knight, took over the school upon the retirement of Richard, his father.

My great grandfather is Richard Knight who took over as head teacher in this school in 1871. There were only two classes, infants and juniors. He taught the juniors. His wife Mary Anne Ross(Knight) taught the infants, and my grandma, Elizabeth Knight (Warden), who I knew well, was a monitor, later to become a teacher herself. They all lived in the school house. Elizabeth married Charles Warden (my grandfather) in Alderbury Church in 1902, and they moved to Bemerton. Charles bought two market gardens and gave one to his eldest son Charles (in Gorringe Road) and the other one to his second son Edwin also in Salisbury. I was evacuated to stay with my grandma and Uncle Charles in Bemerton and went to school inHighbury Avenue. The nursery was a great playground for my brother and me. All the above people were on my mother’s side of the family.
