In the Community History, and details of St Mary's Church you have "The upper stage of the tower was rebuilt in 1674 and the date is still visible from the south east corner" The date should be 1675 which has been proven by me by photographic evidence. There is a copy of the photo in my Book "The History of St Mary's Stapleford" published 2025. Your History Centre has purchased 6 Copies of this book of which I believe you have at least one copy on your local history shelf and possibly at least one copy in your archives. I can provide copies of the photos I have taken if you so desire. I have no date for when the upper stage was started but it is clear to me it was Finished in 1675. The Plaque on the South East Corner of the Tower states 1675 and has the name of two church wardens. Two New Bells were cast in 1655 to make the number 5 bells. At that time I believe the current Oak Frame was manufactured and fitted (not proven), the frame was repaired in 1887 and again in 1999 and is listed. So it is possible the two new bells plus 3 existing ones were possibly fitted somewhere between 1655 and 1675. |
