During the early days of the war, I can remember standing in the street, Whiterow Park, Upper Studley, watching the German planes pass overhead, with quite a few others. The pilots used the Westbury ‘White Horse’ as a compass point to point the way to Bristol, Birmingham, Coventry and anywhere else they were bombing that night. This went on night after night. All the men, including my Dad, went to the authorities to ask could the ‘White Horse’ be covered up. This was eventually done. Sometime in late 1945 I think, it was uncovered, under cover of darkness and on a signal, searchlights were switched on and to great cheers the ‘White Horse’ leapt out into sight. The search lights were along Bratton Road, and at least one on Long River.
