James first came to Wiltshire in 1947, in the 1990s was living in Malmesbury when he was writing a column for the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald. He has played in the London theatre, and has had parts in well known TV series including Inspector Morse and All Creatures Great & Small. He was nominated for a Tony Award and Actor of the Year Olivier Award. He was an Associate member of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and a member of the Royal National Theatre Company. Obituary in The Guardian, 3 July 2012. He lived near Malmesbury from 1977.
