Connection to the community
George Baker lived, for the last part of his life, in West Lavington and almost daily rode his horse over the countryside around Devizes. He received his MBE in 2007 for his work with the young people of Lavington and the building of the youth club. Baker was not only an accomplished and well known actor but also a writer and director. Although he had many opportunities to work in America he saw himself primarily as a British actor. Starting off in theatre he moved between film and television parts before setting up his own theatre company in 1966. His many and varied roles include playing Tiberius in I, Claudius and Inspector Wexford in The Ruth Rendell Mysteries.
