Simon grew up in a military family and lived at Avebury for a time as a teenager. This was his first visit to the White Horse Bookshop in Marlborough. Beale made his name at the Royal Shakespeare Company as a comic actor in the 1980s. Since 1995 he has been a regular player at the National Theatre, a BBC radio and television actor and presenter. He has won two Laurence Olivier and Bafta awards and is an associate artist of the RSC, National Theatre and Almeida Theatre. In 2003, he was made a CBE for his services to the arts. He has been described by The Independent as "the greatest stage actor of his generation". Simon grew to love the own of Marlborough and relocated there in early 2020. At this time he became Marlborough LitFest's first Patron.
