United Church, Cricklade

In 1722 the dwelling house of Thomas Batt was licensed for Independent worship. In 1799 a license was granted for a newly built meeting house and 44 square feet of adjoining ground for a burying place. The minister named was John Bartholomew. The new building was in Calcutt Street and served the Congregationalists for nearly 80 years before the members became too numerous for it.

In 1878 a new church was built in front of the old and the original church became the church hall. The building was renovated in 1960. When the Congregational Church joined with the Presbyterian Church in the early 1970s the church in Calcutt Street became the United Reformed Church, in common with most other churches of those denominations in the country. The church is now the United Church (United Reformed/Methodist) after union with the Methodist Church.
