John Zillwood moved from a private school he had opened in Salisbury, leaving his wife to run that one, and had started a school in Salisbury Street, next to The Bell, by 1848. He continued to run the day school until the late 1870s but in an 1880 directory it is listed under Miss Eliza Zillwood. There is no mention of it by the late 1880s. The Zillwood family were greatly involved in education locally as three successive Miss Zillwoods were headmistress of Spratt's School from 1821 until its closure in 1896.
