Notes

The Hospital of St. John the Baptist seems to have existed in 1195 and a chapel is said to have been dedicated in 1215. A convent of sisters was established and the hospital was given much land and possessions. The hospital survived the dissolution although it was found that none of its income was used to maintain poor people. By 1825 the hospital was 'unused and going to decay' but it was rebuilt in 1851. The chapel was restored in 1868 and repaired and enlarged around 1902. In 2003 the buildings have again been restored and a house refurbished for the warden. The foundation is outside the old borough boundaries and alongside are almshouses.
