Started in 1912 when two day schools in the town were combined. In 1884 the Duke House School for boarders and day boys was set up, moving to new premises in Wingfield Road in 1890. In 1912 Wiltshire County Council bought this school and moved the boys who had been at the co-educational grammar school in the Victoria Technical Institute and set up a new school in Wingfield Road. On 14th April 1969 the boy's and girl's high schools became the Combined High Schools, closing at the end of the Summer term in 1974 to re-open as the John of Gaunt School in August 1974.
