There were non-conformist meetings in the village from c.1790 and in 1811 it was reported that the meeting house was old and in poor repair. In 1810 a Baptist congregation was founded and the Providence chapel was built in 1817. It is in ironstone, with ashlar dressings, and a schoolroom was added to it in 1825. The congregation increased in 1847 when some members seceded from the Baptist chapel at Derry Hill and joined Sandy Lane. On Census Sunday in 1851 three services here had an average congregation of 45. The chapel maintained two services each Sunday until c.1910 and then one each Sunday until c. 1956. After that there were occassional services but the chapel had closed and become a private house by the 1990s.
