Notes

There was said to be a meeting house in Calne in 1660 and Quakers were certainly numerous here in the late 17th century. They suffered much persecution in the second half of the 17th century, a meeting being raided by soldiers in 1660 and some members arrested in 1661. In 1672 they bought a plot of land and built a meeting house, with a burial ground behind it. The meeting house was rebuilt in 1838. The meetings ceased in the early 20th century and the meeting house had been leased by 1921. It was sold in 1962 and now has a shop front on the ground floor.
