Notes

In 1821 a dwelling house had been licensed for Baptist worship and later the Strict Baptist Chapel was on the left at the bottom of Chapel Lane. It was established by 1840 and inscribed ‘Peculiar Baptist Chapel’, supposedly because the builders made a mistake on the engraving when it was re-built in the mid 19th century. The original building was made of wattle and daub with a thatched roof and stone floor. The new Chapel had stone walls and a tiled roof. In 1937 money was raised for work to be done on the Chapel and services were held in the Band Room at the Band Society while the Chapel was being repaired. The Chapel was kept operational through congregational fund raising up to the 1960’s and it closed in 1968. The last burial took place in 1988 and after this the chapel was removed. The small fenced in graveyard, pictured here. still exists.
