Notes

In 1797 a house and garden belonging to John Clift and occupied by Thomas Beth was registered for Independent meetings, and a year later an Independent chapel was built at the western end of Hilcott village by Robert Sloper, who was an Evangelist. It had a plot of ground measuring 100 feet by 50 feet attached to it. Nonconformity may have flourished for a time, due to the central location of North Newnton in the Vale of Pewsey, however the independent chapel was closed between 1848 – 1851 and is not mentioned in Kelly’s Directory of Wiltshire for 1855.
