Notes

A schoolroom for 64 boys and 60 girls was opened in 1849. By 1854 the school at the junction of the High Street and Hyde Lane was in use with three classrooms each respectively containing 100 boys, 70-80 girls and 60-70 infants. Between 1863 and 1886 an evening school was also held here. In the latter part of the 19th century the school also took some children from St. Mary's and Preshute parishes. There was a reorganisation in 1918 when the parish divisions no longer applied and St. Peter's became the boys' school for the town while the girls went to St. Mary's. In 1962 the boys, and the older girls from St. Mary's, moved to the former Grammar School building in The Parade, which became St. Peter's Junior School. The old St. Peter's School closed and soon became the town library, which it still (2003) remains.
